How It Works
The M & T text informs the reader that a purchase was attempted on their card, and if it wasn’t from them they should click a link to resolve the issue. Their aim is to pretend they want to help you resolve the problem, so they would ask for your card details claiming they need it to block the purchase and reverse your money. Doing this, however, will be giving up your credit card information to thieves.
What To Do
When you receive such messages and want to be sure it is not scam, do the following:
- send your bank an email to confirm the authenticity of the text
- if the company says the message is not from them, delete the message immediately
- do not, out of curiosity, call that number to see where it leads
